Local Government in NSW is currently subject to amalgamation proposals, and many leaders in local government have begun the planning required to prepare for future mergers subject to the outcome of the legislated review process.
The time before and after the creation of a new council are a time like no other. There is a huge challenge for the leadership team to understand and acknowledge the history and achievements of the merging councils whilst at the same time taking positive steps to establish the image and presence of the new organisation.
As well as continuing with ‘business as usual’ the council will also be under intense pressure to get organised and to start producing results. The leadership team must cope with the immediate complexity and demands of an enormous range of issues through thoughtful planning, effective communication, encouragement and persuasion, skilful organising and smart problem-solving.
