Media Release: New accreditation program for NSW councillors launched
Local Government NSW (LGNSW), in partnership with TAFE NSW, the UTS Centre for Local Government and the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG), launched a new accredited course for NSW elected members at the 2013 LGNSW Annual Conference today.
Joint President of Local Government NSW, Cr Ray Donald, said the Executive Certificate for Elected Members is an exciting step for LGNSW and its member councils, as it’s the first time such a high-quality course has been offered to NSW councillors.
“The Independent Local Government Review Panel’s ‘20 Essential Steps’ discussion paper emphasised the importance of councillor professional skill development and training, and this course will enable NSW councillors to achieve a Statement of Attainment for the National Elected Members’ Skill Set.”
“Graduates will also receive a UTS Executive Certificate for Elected Members, providing them with sound knowledge and understanding of the NSW Local Government sector, and the relationship between councils, and State and Federal Governments.”
“Eligible graduates of the Executive Certificate for Elected Members will also receive credit towards the UTS Centre for Local Government’s Graduate Certificate in Local Government Leadership or the Master of Local Government,” said Cr Donald.
Joint President of LGNSW, Cr Keith Rhoades AFSM, said developing and providing this program in partnership with such reputable educational institutes will no doubt benefit elected members and their communities.”
“For new councillors, this course will help them make the transition into their community leadership role, as it can be a daunting task stepping into the Local Government arena with little training on legislative responsibilities, land-use planning, and finance and asset management.”
“For existing mayors and councillors, this high-quality course will reinforce their practical Local Government experience with sound theory and techniques to set vision, direction and policy; and balance the short-term and long-term needs of their community.”
“The five-day course, which will be held in three stages, is being piloted in Sydney and Coffs Harbour in November and February respectively,” said Cr Rhoades.
