Natural Resource Management
Local Government plays a significant role in managing and protecting our natural resources, including bushland, river systems, coastal environments, farms, cities and towns.
Councils have a wide range of responsibilities regarding Natural Resource Management (NRM), including those defined in the Charter of the Local Government Act 1993.
The Charter guides councils to properly manage, develop, protect, restore, enhance and conserve the local environment for which it is responsible, in a manner that is consistent with and promotes the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development. Councils will also consider the long-term and cumulative effects of its NRM decisions.
We represent councils to central governments and assist councils with advice on NRM issues.
NRM Policy Commitments
The LGSA, now Local Government NSW, in conjunction with the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) and all other state Associations, have developed a national policy on NRM.
Our policy position states:
- Local Government is committed to achieving sustainable NRM outcomes.
- Local Government is committed to regional approaches to natural resource management.
- Local Government is committed to using its planning processes and powers to deliver local priorities and assist the achievement of regional outcomes.
- Local Government is committed to considering natural resource management (NRM) priorities and community expectations in making decisions about resource allocation, recognising a need for long term resource investment from multiple stakeholders.
