Crime Prevention through Environmental Design

A children's playground at night.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, or CPTED (pronounced "sep-ted"), is a multi-disciplinary approach to designing the physical environment to make it less likely to support criminality, thereby reducing the incidence and fear of crime and improving quality of life for the community.

CPTED aims to create the reality (or perception) that the costs of committing crime are greater than the likely benefits.

As the community then feels safer in a public space, they are more likely to use it and have a sense of communal responsibility for it, so providing capable guardianship of the space.
