Councils drive coordinated push to grow NSW visitor economy
The 2026 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference has wrapped up in Maitland, bringing councils and tourism leaders together to collaborate, share insights and unlock new opportunities for the visitor economy.
Mayor Darcy Byrne, President of LGNSW, said the conference was a resounding success, showcasing the critical role councils play in growing the visitor economy.
“Tourism helps build stronger, more resilient communities. This conference has shown the value of local leadership in turning ambition into action and creating lasting opportunities for communities across the state,” Mayor Byrne said.
“I thank Maitland City Council and their Mayor, Cr Philip Penfold, for their warm hospitality.
“I also thank the Member for Maitland, NSW Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, the Hon Jenny Aitchison MP, for her attendance and support for our conference.”
Council representatives from across the state gathered to explore the critical role of tourism in driving economic growth, supporting local jobs, and strengthening community resilience.
Delegates engaged in a dynamic mix of panel discussions, workshops and site visits, exploring everything from emerging trends and practical tools in the visitor economy to global marketing strategies and key policy issues shaping the sector.
The program also delved into how council-owned assets could be activated to enhance visitor experiences, alongside the opportunities presented by new and upgraded airport infrastructure to drive future tourism growth.
The conference included the announcement of the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards, hosted by the NSW Tourism Association and presented by Chair of the Association, the Hon Stuart Ayres.
The awards recognise the remarkable efforts of councils and communities in creating memorable visitor experiences.
