In 2017/18, Local Government NSW (LGNSW) and its state and territory associations undertook research on the local government workforce and its future skills needs.

Drawing on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) and an Australia-wide council survey, the research focused on:

• The demographic profile of employees in local government
• Skills shortages, skills gaps and emerging skills needs of councils
• Uptake of apprenticeships and traineeships in councils
• Issues around accessing training to address skills gaps
