New minimum accessibility standards for affordable housing

Minimum accessibility provisions for residential housing and apartments will be included in the National Construction Code 2022, following a recent meeting held by the Commonwealth, state and territory Building Ministers.

The move is designed to help increase Australia’s stock of accessible housing, and will be accompanied by a voluntary gold technical standard for accessible housing published by the Australian Building Codes Board.

With each state and territory free to determine whether and how the new provisions are applied in their jurisdiction, LGNSW will continue to advocate for the application of these standards in NSW.

With more and more Australians seeking to grow old at home, the need for accessible housing continues to grow.

LGNSW has been advocating on this matter over several years, informed by Annual Conference resolutions – most recently a successful motion by Canterbury-Bankstown Council at the 2020 Annual Conference.
