LGNSW a signatory to National Communications Charter

LGNSW has become a signatory of the National Communications Charter.

This is a direct response to Lake Macquarie City Council’s motion at the 2022 Annual Conference, asking for LGNSW to become a signatory of the charter and encouraging other councils to do the same.

The National Communications Charter was developed by Life in Mind, which is an initiative of Everymind, a national mental health and suicide prevention institute.

The National Communications Charter aims to advance suicide prevention practices in Australia by using a unified approach among the mental health and suicide prevention sector, government, and industry bodies to address mental health and suicide prevention. It equips people with tools and strategies to talk about mental health and suicide.

As part of the responsibility of being a signatory, LGNSW will be promoting and sharing resources from Everymind and other mental health and suicide prevention agencies via our communications channels.

We aim to share useful tips and strategies that councils can use in their organisations and communities to help with preventing or further damaging the mental health and wellbeing of others.

Becoming a signatory of the National Communications Charter aligns with LGNSW’s existing policy positions, which call for:

  • the NSW and Australian governments to address the mental health crisis and ensure adequate access to care across NSW (Policy Platform 14.11).
  • new models for infrastructure, service delivery, health, and mental health care to the regions (Policy Platform 4.4).
