Mayors, councillors and council staff are working hard to maintain services and infrastructure during these difficult times. However, forced service and facility closures in response to COVID-19 have hit councils hard, contributing to already mounting costs and declining revenues.

NSW councils cannot afford to bear the brunt of the compounding financial impacts of drought, bushfires and in some regions, floods and now the COVID-19 pandemic.

LGNSW is advocating for State and Federal government economic stimulus to secure the delivery of the essential local government services needed to keep our communities running, to protect people’s health and their livelihoods.

Community resilience is at stake if local councils are not adequately resourced to deliver the support and essential services our communities, staff, and customers need during a sustained period of severe hardship and financial pressure.

Local councils are also well placed to drive economic stimulus through employment, services, community programs and construction of shovel ready infrastructure projects.

Specifically, we are asking for:

  • increased Financial Assistance Grants to 1 per cent
  • immediate economic stimulus to support council employees, especially in early education and care. Many councils throughout the state – particularly in rural and regional NSW – are the biggest employer in their local community.
  • stimulus funding for projects that will boost local economies, including by increasing existing programs such as Roads to Recovery, and
  • increased access to TAFE, VET and other apprenticeship opportunities that council staff can undertake to address skill shortages, especially for staff in non-essential services who are unable to be redeployed.
