Stronger building regulation
Stronger building regulation is a key advocacy priority for Local Government NSW.

LGNSW and councils have called on successive state governments over two decades to take actions to address deficiencies with building and certifier regulation.

Local government wants to see a system which ensures that all parties are responsible and accountable for their actions, and the community and public interest is at the forefront.

LGNSW supports the NSW Building Commissioner’s reform program and is working closely with the Commissioner who is consulting widely and is keen to work with local government to progress building industry reform.

Combustible cladding
Since 2017, Local Government NSW has advocated for leadership from the State Government in the management of flammable cladding issues in NSW. LGNSW and councils sought to work in partnership with government in responding to this challenging issue.

LGNSW and councils have consistently advocated for a clear, consistent, state-wide response to managing this issue, along with support and funding to deal with cladding and the release of details surrounding identified high-risk buildings. LGNSW has provided a coordinating role, sharing information and facilitating briefings with the NSW Government’s Cladding Taskforce and councils.

After more than two years of advocating for state coordination and direction, LGNSW welcomed the establishment of the Cladding Support Unit in 2019.
