Second term for LGNSW President Linda Scott

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) will be headed by President Linda Scott for a second term, hot on the heels of the signing of a landmark Intergovernmental Agreement between state and local government.

The Australian Electoral Commission formally declared City of Sydney Councillor Linda Scott returned as President following LGNSW Board elections, held at the peak body’s annual conference in Sydney this week.

“I am extremely proud to have been elected President of LGNSW for a second term and thank all the NSW mayors and councillors who participated in shaping our advocacy agenda at this year’s conference,” she said.

“LGNSW, which represent councils right across state, is well placed to pursue that agenda following the signing of an Intergovernmental Agreement, which establishes an equal partnership between local and state government and will help us deliver results for our councils and communities.

“A key focus for LGNSW will be a campaign urging government to invest the $770 million Waste Levy into regional scale waste and recycling plans that will help restore ailing recycling services.”

Cr Scott said the structure of the 18-member LGNSW board remained largely unchanged following the election.

“We have four new faces replacing outgoing members – Fairfield City councillor Dai Le, Bellingen Shire Mayor Dominic King, Dubbo Regional Council Deputy Mayor Stephen Lawrence and City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale – who bring a wealth of experience to the LGNSW board,” she said.

“They will join our existing board directors in driving the issues councils have asked us to advocate for on their behalf.

“I have enjoyed the past two years working with the board, as well as mayors, councillors and councils across the state, and am looking forward to the new challenges ahead.”

The Australian Electoral Commission has declared the election of LGNSW Board Directors as follows:

Karen McKeown (Penrith City), Mazhar Hadid (Liverpool City), Julie Griffiths (Blacktown City), Khal Asfour (City of Canterbury Bankstown), George Greiss (Campbelltown City), Lesley Furneaux-Cook (Burwood) and Dai Le (Fairfield City).

Directors (Rural/Regional)

Darriea Turley (Broken Hill City), Phyllis Miller (Forbes Shire), Marianne Saliba (Shellharbour City), Ruth Fagan (Cowra), Ben Shields (Dubbo Regional), Keith Rhoades (Coffs Harbour City) and Dominic King (Bellingen Shire).

They join President Linda Scott (City of Sydney), Treasurer Jerome Laxale (City of Ryde), Vice-President Metro/Urban Angelo Tsirekas (City of Canada Bay) and Vice-President Rural/Regional Stephen Lawrence (Dubbo Regional) on the Board of LGNSW.

Cr Scott thanked outgoing board members Scott Ferguson (Blayney Shire), Marjorie O’Neill (Waverley), Michael Regan (Northern Beaches), Paul Harmon (Inverell Shire) and Rod Kendall (Wagga Wagga City) for their contributions to LGNSW.
