Sustainability

Offering a range of resources, training and events, Local Government NSW (LGNSW) actively supports member councils with their sustainability initiatives.

The Local Government Act 1993 states that ecologically sustainable development requires the effective integration of economic and environmental considerations in decision-making processes.

What’s more, the Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework also requires NSW councils to address social, environmental, economic and civic leadership issues in an integrated way.

A number of principles underpin ecologically sustainable development as follows:

  • Precautionary principle – prevent environmental degradation and manage and mitigate risk.
  • Intergenerational equity – today’s actions must maintain or enhance the environment for future generations.
  • Conservation of biological diversity and ecological integrity.
  • Improved economic valuation – recognising the value of the environment to the community.
