President's Message 26 September 2019

CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY CHANGES – In spite of concerns raised by the Australian Local Government Association the Australian Government released the new Citizenship Ceremonies Code last week, requiring councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day and introduce a dress standard for people attending. While most councils already hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, there is an exception in the code for small councils that conferred citizenship on less than 20 people in the previous year. ACTION ON CLADDING ISSUES – More than 50 council staff attended a forum hosted by the newly-established NSW Government Cladding Support Unit in Sydney last Tuesday. The unit was formed in response to our persistent calls for leadership and a central point of contact on cladding issues, and it’s pleasing to see this work progressing. The aim is for all potentially high-risk buildings to be assessed by the end of 2019, followed by the development of interim fire safety measures and action plans by the end of March 2020. The government has also published a new Guide for the Assessment of Buildings with Combustible Cladding to assist councils and other relevant authorities to undertake risk assessments and draft action plans. To discuss further or raise issues your council is experiencing email LGNSW Strategy Manager Jane Partridge.
