Social and Community

As the sphere of government closest to the people they represent, councils work hard to create social cohesion and a sense of belonging for all members of the community.

This means providing equal access to essential services, the fair distribution of resources, prioritising the health and safety of all community members, and recognition of different groups within the community.

At Local Government NSW (LGNSW), we provide support, advice and advocacy services to member councils on a variety of issues relating to social and community policy.

Whether it’s Aboriginal affairs, ageing, arts & culture, children & youth, disability, libraries, multiculturalism or women in local government, we assist councils in applying the principles of equity, rights, access and participation.

Like to know more?
LGNSW also supports and advocates for a range of other social policy issues, including housing and homelessness, volunteering, water safety, squalor and hoarding, cemeteries, and harm prevention.  Please contact Bronwen Regan, LGNSW Strategy Manager – Social and Community, for more information on social policy issues affecting local government.

Submissions
LGNSW makes regular submissions to the state and federal governments, plus other agencies, to advocate on behalf of the interests of local government and their communities when it comes to social and community issues. Please visit our submissions page for more details.
